When talking about metal fabrication and cutting, we come across the term ‘surface grinder‘. This machine tool is mainly used during the cutting processes in abrasive metal fabrication. It is an extensively used rough machining method where a spinning drum with covered rough cylinders is used to cut chips of non-metallic or metallic material from a workpiece, producing a rough, smoothened surface. The roughness of the surface is adjusted by the size and type of cutter that are attached to the machine.
As compared to the other machining operations, such as belt grind, lathe, and sawing, surface grinding does not require a lot of manual work or time. Also, it does not use electricity so it does not create any harmful emissions. You can operate the flat surface grinder either manually or electrically. The following are the basic operations of this machine tool:
This operation is similar to the operation of grinding but uses a different type of equipment. Unlike grinding, surface grinder uses a magnetic chuck instead of spinning wheels. To make a workpiece flat and smooth, the workpiece is placed between two magnetic chucks which are pushed simultaneously. A magnetic chuck has the ability to slide along a flat surface and grind a fine edge of that surface.
A wide range of machines are available to perform surface grinders. In general, two types of surface grinder are available in the market: the stand-up type and the vertical type. Both these machines are powered by a different type of electric motor, namely: direct drive and constant speed.
The stand-up grinder includes a blade and a grinding plate. The plate is made of diamond plate, which is diamond plate with a small amount of iron oxide coating. The blade of this machine is often heated by electrical arc and then compressed to obtain a sharp, clean edge. There is no need to lubricate the blade; however, it is recommended to use a lubricant for long service life. On the contrary, the vertical grinder consists of two horizontal plates. These plates are connected to each other by means of spring and are moved vertically.
These types of surface grinding machines are suitable to work on rough flat surfaces such as stainless steel, aluminum and brass. It offers several advantages over electro-type grinders such as: faster speeds, higher torque and accuracy. However, this machine type needs to be plugged on for longer periods of time. Moreover, it offers limited capability to work on soft and powdery flat surfaces because of its reduced accuracy.
