Understanding High Speed CNC Machining

High speed CNC machining of steel and aluminum are some of the most innovative and advanced CNC machining applications available in the market today. Using high speed CNC technology, an employee can work a machine faster, more accurately and without error. And all with one machine. But with all the benefits of high speed CNC machining, it is important to understand that high speed CNC does not guarantee accuracy and fast work speed.

Precision machining comes from being able to run your machine at high speeds. The higher the RPMs you run the better. However, there are machines out there that run at higher RPMs than they should due to some flaws in the machine’s design.

An example of such a flaw would be a small “gap” between the workpiece and the machining head. This is often caused by improperly machined parts within the CNC tool and most often can be seen as an elongated tooth pattern. An even more common way for a machining company to use their machine at high speeds is to use low quality metals.

Low quality metals make machining more difficult because the wear and tear that machining creates can easily cause the metal to be worn or damaged beyond its true properties. A good example of a low quality metal used in high speed CNC machining is aluminum. Aluminum is normally made to be very thin for the same task because it is stronger than copper and has greater tolerance for friction and heat.

However, it is often found that machining companies will not accept aluminum as part of the core alloy. Even if it is alloyed, the aluminum is often either stamped into the metal itself or have some form of a thin layer on top of the core. This thin layer causes the aluminum to chip and fragment under high speed CNC machining.

These types of issues, and other types of flaws, can be remedied with proper maintenance of the machine. By taking the time to perform routine maintenance on the machine, the machining company will be better equipped to handle the types of machining needs the machine can handle. However, even with the right maintenance, high speed CNC can produce faulty parts if proper maintenance is not performed.
